The Flaherty's

“From the fury of the O’Flahertys, good Lord deliver us.”

Audaces Fortuna Juvat
“Fortune Favors the Bold”
The O’Flaherty Motto

The O’Flaherty name has a long and distinguished history dating back nearly three thousand years in Ireland. They were sailors who manned the fleets in Western Ireland and at one time ruled most of that area. After the Normans invaded from the mainland and took residence in Galway, the O’Flahertys made them feel as unwelcome as possible, leading to the words at the top of the page being inscribed in one of the walls of the old city.

From the first O’Flaherty whose name was Flaithbheartaigh, the name has lived on in Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Our small branch of the clan came from the Aran Islands in Galway Bay and settled in Woburn, Massachusetts.

There are many histories written about the O’Flaherty people and we will not go into those on this site. Check out the links page for some of these sites on the web. And look through this site to see the Genealogy of our branch of Flahertys.
